Old Bay Seasoning
Old bay seasoning is a combination of spices and herbs produced and sold in the United States by McCormisk & Company. The Chesapeake Bay is the area where it is produced by McCormick & Company.
The old bay seasoning, as the mixture is named, dates back sixty years ago. There was a German called Gustav Brunn who came to the United States having a dream of a business that would grant him success in the land of freedom. He wanted to have a spice business so he created his own secret recipe after he settled down in Baltimore. This recipe of his became known as the old bay seasoning and it is a combination of more than twelve spices and herbs. This combination includes celery seed, mustard, red pepper, laurel leaves, salt, cloves, ginger mace, cinnamon, cardamom and so on. Due to its excellent combination of spices, many people along the Atlantic coast have loved and used it in their cooking since the 1940s and it is considered one of the best crab seasonings.
Again considering the name, old bay seasoning is related to Old Bay Line, the name of a ship which used the waters of Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. The name of Gustav Brunn’s company became Old Bay Company. In those times, the seasonings that his company produced were canned in yellow containers and around the year 1990 his company was bought by McCormick & Company.
As previously mentioned, the mixture of herbs and spices called old bay seasoning is great for crabs and shrimp recipes. You couldn’t possibly live on the Atlantic coast without having tried old bay seasoning on crabs and shrimp unless you really do not like seafood at all. However, a lot of people love it as a topping for popcorn, for salads and they combine it when cooking chicken, fries, corn on the con and potato chips. Old bay seasoning is widely appreciated in the United States and even greater companies like Subway have used it is making sandwiches, like the tuna sandwich.
Old bay seasoning is a delicious spice mixture around the kitchen and especially if you are a seafood lover, you should try to get your hands on this seasoning and make your seafood tastier. The Maryland producer has indeed made a good investment when buying Brunn’s recipe of seasoning. And a tasty investment would be your own purchase of this delicious blend of herbs and spices.
